Superior's Santa Clara Auction Results Up 128% Over Last Year
Beverly Hills, California – April 5, 2004 - Superior Galleries, Inc.
(Pink Sheets: SPGR) announced today that prices realized from its Santa
Clara Elite rare coin auction, held on April 2nd and 3rd, exceeded $2.176
million. This represents an increase of 128% over Superior’s April 2003
Santa Clara auction that realized just over $953,000. Superior is the
official auctioneer of the Santa Clara Coin Show.
Among the highlights of the auction was a 1909-S VDB PCGS MS65 RED that
sold for $15,525 and is one of America’s most highly collected coins.
The price realized for this coin is more than triple the current wholesale
price of $4,400.
An 1894 gold proof set consisting of a $2 1/2, $5, $10 and $20 in NGC PF65
to 66 condition realized a spectacular price of $201,250 versus a pre-auction
estimate of $100,000.
An 1855 Wass, Molitor & Co. $50 Gold Coin in NGC MS60 that is a famous
example of a California Gold Rush coinage and is usually in very worn
condition realized $97,750.
A new world record at auction was set for an 1879 $4 Flowing Hair "Stella"
that garnered an astronomical price realized of $333,500. This very popular,
but little know coin to the non-collector community vastly exceeded a
recently published wholesale price of $200,000.
A magnificently toned 1926 Oregon Trail Commemorative Half Dollar coin
realized an extraordinary $69,000 in competitive bidding. This unusual
specimen was the star attraction of the session held on Saturday,
April 3, 2004.
