Superior Announces Orlando Elite Rare Coin Auction Results
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2004--Superior Galleries,
Inc. (Pink Sheets:SPGR - News) announced today that prices realized from
its Orlando Elite rare coin auction, held on January 6, 2004, exceeded
$6.0 million.
Among the highlights of the auction were an extremely rare 1854-S $2.50
Coronet Head Quarter Eagle formerly in the collection of oil magnate
and Vail, Colorado real estate developer, Harry W. Bass, Jr. that realized
$178,250 in competitive bidding. The coin, which is graded Uncirculated
50, is the finest known specimen among the 12 or so extant.
"Modern" coins, which represent U.S. coins struck after the Depression
Era, remain very desirable. A 1961-D Washington Quarter Dollar graded Mint
State 67 garnered $13,800 and a 1962-D Washington quarter realized $11,500.
The overall strength of the rare coin market was in evidence as 5 coins
broke the $100,000 barrier, while another 129 items, comprising mostly
single coin lots, realized from $10,000 to $97,750.
